We at Kennel Talvitaipaleen Siberian Huskies want to offer our clients enjoyable experiences driving your own husky team through the snowy landscapes of the finest
part of Lapland!
Our husky farm is located 22km north of Muonio. The safaris start a bit further away
from our home, which allows us to go directly into the woods. The routes
lead us through wide snowy areas of wilderness, crossing beautiful ice covered lakes and ponds aside the small Lappish mountains and hills, heading every once in a while into the woods again.
The safaris are guided by an experienced wilderness guide. Everyone will be driving a husky team of his or her own, while children travel safely in the sled of the guide.
The routes are reasonably easy. Driving a dogsled requires no special skills, yet again dog sledding is not merely standing on the runners. For an enjoyable ride some basic fitness and ability to control your own body in possible tighter situations is required.
Driving instructions for dog sledding are given at the beginning of each safari. This is to make sure you know how to drive your team of huskies and how to handle the sled in various situations.
Here you never know what the weather conditions might be. They vary from pleasantly
mild near to zero to the hard coldness of -25 below zero or even colder. Please take this into consideration in terms of clothing. Our huskies won't mind the coldness, they actually enjoy their work more when the going gets arctic! At the end of the day the mushers eyebrows might be covered in frost though.
This winter we offer you two kinds of safaris:
THE GAMELANDS OF THE GNOMES
We'll be heading our husky teams to the wilderness cabin of The Gnomes, located on the north side of lake Mias. We'll have a break at this hunting cabin, which is the halfway point of the safari. At a typical Finnish laavu we'll enjoy some Lappish sandwiches or fry ourselves sausages on an open fire. Of course, it's absolutely necessary to taste nokipannukahvi, a coffee made on an open fire. It is always somewhat a surprise whether it will be strong or very strong. But it definitely tastes good in conditions like these!
Here you also have plenty of time to get to know your team of dogs and all the other dogs
too. Huskies are very friendly beings, who enjoy having their bellies rubbed and
being photographed into photo albums all over Europe!
Length of this safari is about 20km, and depending a bit on the weather the duration will
be around three hours.
VUOSSUKKA DAYTRIP
We'll start the safari by driving our husky teams through the breathtaking wilderness for about 20km. We are not likely to meet many people on our way. Well, maybe reindeers, or perhaps an occasional reindeer herder on a snowmobile checking out his animals' whereabouts.
We'll have a break at a Finnish laavu or kota, where your guide will prepare a warm meal
on an open fire to get you going yet another 17km. On this safari you won't escape the
Finnish nokipannukahvi either. We've actually had people coming back for more!
Our huskies enjoy the break too, mostly because they know they will get some attention
and hugs from their drivers.
Length of this safari is about 37km, and here as well the conditions which the wilderness provides us with will decide how long it takes. The duration will be around five hours.
This longer daytrip is better suited for persons driving their own team of dogs and is therefore not recommended for children.
